A GOUACHE WORK FROM MÜBİN ORHON'S "MONOCHROME PERIOD"...

Mübin Orhon - "Abstrait Rouge et Violet"

MONOCHROME PERIOD: THE INFINITY OF SOLITUDE, 1971-1981...

Although the earliest examples appeared starting from 1978, in the final years of his life, Mübin Orhon’s paintings began to feature slender, elongated lines. These lines are almost doubly framed by color blocks that carry a heavy dramatic presence. In a catalog essay I wrote in 1996, I argued that these lines could be interpreted alongside the works of Hans Hartung.

The lines in Mübin Orhon’s compositions imply a tense point, as if revealing that the colors melting into one another “reside somewhere between the frozen and the fleeting” (Bilge Karasu). It is an extremely dramatic moment in the painting where it “opens its heart” to the viewer — a moment so profound that it cannot be fully expressed in words.
