Leyla Gamsız - "Abstract Composition in Yakacik"
LEYLA GAMSIZ'S LANDSCAPE AND NEIGHBORHOOD PAINTINGS...
Much later, in an assessment presented under the title “Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum” published by Türkiye İş Bankası, Leyla Gamsız is identified as one of the artists whose goal was “to create original paintings that do not imitate Western painters, preserve local sensitivity, yet do not miss the contemporary line.” Furthermore, it is stated that she “succeeded in emerging among the artists who, without taking formal influences from the André Lhote Atelier, managed to determine their own original artistic expression.”
Kıymet Giray’s continuing observation on Leyla Gamsız’s work in the same text is as follows:
“Gamsız’s paintings are recognized as abstractions where figurative interpretations gain prominence. Her landscape views also rest on abstraction. The artist, who paints a certain geography or neighborhood, strives to abstract and transfer the values she has internalized onto the canvas. Meanwhile, the structural composition of the painting breaks down into geometric sections that emphasize surface expression. In this application, where spots dominate over lines, the nature abstractions exhibit a subjective approach.”
