Necdet Kalay - "Barges on the Golden Horn"
ONE OF NECDET KALAY’S MOST POPULAR COMPOSITIONS: “BARGES ON THE GOLDEN HORN”…
In this impressive composition, Necdet Kalay presents a powerful and original interpretation of the Golden Horn, one of Istanbul’s iconic landscapes. The painting is painted with a dark palette dominated by misty grays, browns and off-whites; from this atmosphere, the historical silhouette of Istanbul—with its domes and minarets—appears out of the fog. In the foreground, a series of barges and steamships are lined up on the water’s edge; the smoke rising from their chimneys and colorful details (yellow and red tones) create a vivid contrast to the overall melancholic atmosphere of the work.
Shaped by Kalay’s characteristically expressive brush strokes and surface textures, this work reflects the artist’s ability to convey the spirit of a space with an abstract yet impressive language. Painting Istanbul not with photographic clarity but through a filter of memory, emotion and movement, Kalay brings together an impressionist haze with the materiality of oil painting. In the work, the coexistence of the old and the new, the sacred and the industrial, stands out as a theme frequently used by the artist in his work.
