Knolles'in bu heybetli eseri Rönesans döneminde Türklerle ilgili İngilizce basılan kitapların en önemlisidir. Kitap basıldığı sırada tahta geçen I.James'e ithaf edilmiştir. Knolles, Sandwich’te bir okulun baş öğretmeniydi. İngiltere’den dışarı çıkmamıştı. Knolles, 12 yıllık sıkı çalışmanın sonucunda tamamlayabildiği kitabı yazarken Busbecq, Giovio, Georgievitz, Barletius gibi yazarların eserlerine başvurmuştur. Başvurduğu en önemli kaynaklardan biri de içinden 28 portre gravürü kullandığı Boissard’ın "Vitae et Icones Sultanorum" başlıklı eseridir.

1490 yılında Fransa’nın Albi kentinde doğan Petrus Gyllii (Latinceleşmiş biçimiyle Petrus Gyllius) aldığı eğitimle kendisini eskiçağ bilgisine ulaştıracak klasik dilleri öğrenir. Gramer kitapları, sözlükler yayınlar; bu dillerden çeviriler yapar. Öte yandan, o güne kadar bulunmamış ilkçağ metinlerini aramak, keşfetmek tutkusuyla Yunanca ve Latince el yazmalarının peşine düşer. İstanbul, Roma İmparatorluğu’nun başkenti olduktan sonra, klasik çağ yazmalarının çoğaltıldığı bir kenttir. Bu nedenle gerek Bizans döneminde, özellikle de fetihten sonra İstanbul’a diplomatik görevle veya seyyah olarak gelen Avrupalıların amaçlarından biri de bu eserleri toplayıp ülkelerine götürmek olmuştur. Biliniyor ki, Avusturya elçisi Busbecq’in, o yıllarda İstanbul’a gelen Hans Dernschwam’ın, diğer seyyah ve misyonerlerin götürdüğü bu değerli yazmalar, Avrupa’daki bugünkü kütüphanelerin temel taşlarını oluşturmuşlardır. Gyllii de, klasik yazma kaynaklarını yerinde toplamak ve tarihsel kalıntıları incelemek amacıyla 1544 yılında, Fransa Kralı I. François’in maddi desteği ile İstanbul’a gelir ve burada üç yıl kalır. Gyllii'nin farkına vararak İstanbul'da ilk kez ortaya çıkardığ anıtlar vardır. Bunlardan en ilgi çekeni günümüzde "Yerebatan Sarnıcı" olarak anılan 532 yılında Justinianus tarafından yaptırılmış olan Bizans sarnıcıdır. Gyllii İstanbul'daki araştırmalarını “De Constantinopoleos Topographia Libri IV” ve İstanbul Boğazı üzerine yazdığı “De Bosporo Tracio” kitaplarında yayınlar.
