MİMMO ROTELLA (1918 - 2006)
Mimmo Rotella was born in Catanzaro, Italy in 1918. He completed his education at the "Accademia di Belle Arti" in Naples before moving to Rome in 1945. Associated with the 'Lettrism Stream', one of the pioneers of street art, the artist opened his first solo exhibition in Rome in 1951. The artist, who won the 'Fulbright Scholarship' in the same year, studied at the University of Kansas City. Rotella, one of the important representatives of post-war European art, worked on a collage technique he made by tearing up advertising posters on the street and developed the term 'Double décollages'. In 1961, world-renowned artists Yves Klein, Arman and Jean Tinguey came to Paris to join the 'New Realism' movement. Rotella, one of the important names of this trend, took part in many group exhibitions. The artist, who represented Italy at the Venice Biennale in 1964, passed away in 2006.
