TURGUT ATALAY (1918 - 2004)
Atalay was born in Konya in 1918. He studied art in the Ateliers of Nazmi Ziya, İbrahim Çallı, and Leopold Levy during 1936-1945. He studied sculpture in R. Belling Atelier for two years. In 1940s, he joined the Newcomers’ Group (also known as the Harbor Group) After teaching art for four years, he worked as a stage designer for operas and theatres for a long period of time. In his paintings, the effects of classical accumulation are dominant. He is a follower of the figurative art understanding. He is among socialist-realist artists, and his subjects are regional topics like fishermen, harbor workers and portraits. He died in Istanbul in 2004.
