Hasan Vecih Bereketoğlu

Hasan Vecih Bereketoğlu

HASAN VECİH BEREKETOĞLU (1895 - 1971)

He was born in 1895 in Egypt where he spent his childhood. He completed his secondary education in Rhodes. He studied law in Istanbul Darülfünun. He started painting under the supervision of Halil Pasha and Hikmet Onat. He went to Paris in 1923 and worked at the Julian Academy. He returned home a year later. He published articles on painting in art and literature magazines. He lived in Ankara between 1943-50 and served as the President of the Presidency. Bereketoğlu, who worked in line with the impressionist understanding among the artists of the 1914 Generation, is generally known for his landscapes on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. By choosing to work outdoors, he produced many paintings aimed at detecting the effects of light on objects / figures. He captured a different dimension of interpretation by expressing his understanding of visual order with his own gray values and colors neutralized with white. In this respect, he had an interesting and original style that oscillated between an academic attitude and an understanding of shaping using impressionist luster and pure colors in a controlled manner. In his portraits, figures and still life paintings he occasionally made, it is seen that Bereketoğlu tries to combine impressionist techniques with a more academic expression. He died in Istanbul in 1971.
