Hoca Ali Rıza

HOCA ALİ RIZA (1858 - 1930)

He was born in Üsküdar in 1858. Hoca Ali Rıza, who is a graduate of the Military Academy, received his first painting education from Saray Yaveri Osman Nuri and Süleyman Seyyid. Known by the nickname “Hoca” during his lifetime, as he worked as an art teacher in many schools, the artist was one of the first Turkish painters to draw sketches from nature. The paintings he made during his student years were highly appreciated by Abdulhamid 11 and he was awarded with Mecidi Medal in 1881. The artist, who graduated from the teaching class of Harbiye in 1884, was appointed as the assistant of Osman Nuri Pasha to the school's painting teacher. In 1895, he made design studies at Yıldız Porcelain Factory, and in 1903 he prepared the album Ottoman Clothes. He was appointed as the chief painter of the Military School Printing House in 1909 and as a painting teacher to the Şehzadegân class in 1910. After retiring in 1911, he worked as a landscape teacher at İnas Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi and as a painting teacher in various high schools. Being one of the founders of the Ottoman Painters Association, the artist participated in Galatasaray exhibitions and opened personal exhibitions. He painted almost every corner of Istanbul with a realistic, warm and sincere attitude. Highly illuminated Istanbul views dominated by transparent and warm colors are the best examples reflecting the artist's original style. He passed away in 1930 in Üsküdar.
