Naci Kalmukoğlu

NACİ KALMUKOĞLU (1986-1954)

He was born in 1896 in Harkof. One of the Kalmuk Turks, Kalmukoğlu had to interrupt his education at the Fine Arts Academy, where he attended for 4.5 years, due to the 1917 revolution, and moved to the Crimea. He came to Istanbul in 1920 and became a Turkish citizen. He earned his living by making theater decorations for a while. He painted the billboards in the big cinemas, hotels and restaurants of Istanbul, the stage decorations of the community centre, and the pavilion paintings of the Izmir Fair. The artist, who was sent to Berlin by the Ministry of National Education in 1928, opened his first exhibition in Ankara in 1940. It is observed that his works on landscape, portrait and nude subjects combine traditional Soviet realism with an impressionist palette that occasionally shifts to an academic level. His dominating attitude on the subjects he dealt with, his knowledge of patterns and colors brought him together with the common discipline of the Fine Arts Union in Turkey. He died in Istanbul in 1954.
