Aliye Berger (1903 - 1974)

Aliye Berger was born in 1903 in Istanbul. She comes from a family that includes a lot of artists. Her father Şakir Paşa is a photographer, her brother Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı (Halikarnas Balıkçısı) is a writer/interpreter, her sister Fahrelnissa Zeid is an artist, her niece is ceramics artist Füreya Koral and her nephew is artist Nejad Melih Devrim. Educated at French high school, Berger watched the art movements in Berlin and Paris through 1935-1939, took sculpture and engraving lessons and participated at J.B. Wright’s artist studio between 1947-1950. Even though Aliye Berger mostly did drawing and oil painting, she is mainly recognized with her expressionist engravings. The artist who uses sand paper, butcher paper and cheesecloth, reflected the patterns of everyday life and various corners of Istanbul in an unique lyricism and expressionism way. The artist passed away in 1974 in Büyükada.
