Burcu Perçin (1979- )
Burcu Perçin was born in 1979 in Ankara. She graduated from Istanbul Anatolian Fine Arts High School in 1997. Afterwars she graduated from Mimar Sinan University Painting Department Kemal İskender Studio in 2002. In the same year, her works were exhibited in the “Young Initiative” exhibition organized by Pera Museum. She opened his first personal exhibition in Istanbul in 2005. She was represented at art fairs in Frankfurt and Cologne. Her works met with art lovers at the “Istanbul Now” exhibition held in Vienna in 2007. On March 4, 2009, she became the youngest artist of "The Turkish Sale" organized by Sotheby's Auction House in London.
The artist, who generally works in oil on canvas technique, deals with spaces as subject in her works. These spaces emerge as a result of the compositions that the artist creates with the photographs she took from the abandoned areas she discovered. The artist, who creates a new composition by combining places such as industrial areas, factories, warehouses, shipyards, sometimes the objects found in these places, and the objects and images she finds in other places, reinterprets these photo-collages and transfers them to the canvas, and each time she conveys and offers a sense of end in a deep simplicity. Perçin, emphasizes that what is lost is not only nature itself but also the future of man, and in these works, she visualizes the silent scream of nature with the moving and distinctive brush strokes she applies to the canvas through a unique aesthetic language. The artist, who underlines how problematic the relationship between man and nature is in her narratives, sheds light on the more personal moments where the individual is locked in space and becomes lonely, in addition to themes such as unemployment and poverty that globalization has created in the industrial order. She also sees the damage caused by the relations of interest on the environment and the artificial nature landscapes produced by humans as one of the main subjects of her brush. In her recent works, it is seen that graffiti is also included in her painting. While Rivet draws attention to the forgotten areas, it destroys the memory of the place; but the graffiti in the pictures indicate that these places are still being used and hidden traces are left there.
The artist expresses herself through the disciplines of sculpture and photography as well as painting. The photo-collage shows strong parallels with the works in which he intervenes with oil paint on the photograph and the relief works she creates from natural stones. The artist references both abstract and realist painting thought practices in her works, whose visual perception changes according to the distance viewed, which are perceived as abstract forms when viewed closely, and parts of the whole appear when one moves away. Perçin, who continues the abstract language in her canvas paintings with oil paints in her works that she cuts natural stones and marbles on a surface, opens a new window to the idea of nature, which has a special place in art practice, through these works.
