The Medal of Merit, which was established by Sultan II. Abdulhamid, is a medal given by the sultan to those of the Ottoman citizens who showed loyalty and heroism, to encourage their peers and to appreciate them. It was also given by other sultans until the last period of the Ottoman Empire. The first minted 100 pieces were of gold, the later ones were minted as silver.
