American “Fractional Notes”
Due to the unavailability of gold, silver and copper during the American Civil War, by the decision of the American Congress, paper change money in denominations of 3 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents and 50 cents were put into circulation between 1862 and 1876. These small denomination notes, which was generally printed in small sizes, became convertible into silver coins as of 1876.
