The 1854 Holy Alliance Medal was awarded to the British and French soldiers who fought on the Ottoman Empire's side against Russia in the Crimean War of 1853-56. The medal, which symbolizes the alliance of England and France against Russia, has the British and French flags on its front, with a Grenadier Guard saluting a French rifleman with a drum and cannon in the background. The medal reads "Holy Alliance" in French and English on its front, and the French inscription "England and France united to defend the oppressed and avenge the insulted Europe" on its back. This medal is produced in silver, white alloy, bronze and printed in English and French on the back. The rarest model is the silver one, and medals with French writing on the back are less common.
