MEHMET PESEN (1923 - 2012)

Mehmet Pesen was born in Istanbul in 1923 and studied art at the workshop of Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu at Istanbul Fine Arts Academy (currently Mimar Sinan Academy of Fine Arts). He established the “Group of Ten” with his colleagues of the workshop. Pesen first started painting using a style which interpreted nature as a fine embroidery, followed by a period of abstract painting where feelings dominated and finally decided to adopt a more concrete style. His love for local arts found an outlet in miniatures. His themes include Anatolian traditional folk dances, fishermen of the Black Sea, tea leaves gatherers and the landscapes of Bodrum, Kas and Cappadocia, His contemporary and nationalistic concerns are reflected in a sincere, poetical and emotional interpretation with universal dimensions. He passed away in 2012.
