"Still Life"

“I will examine what has been done in the field of painting so far, by separating the ones that fascinate me the most among those that have made themselves accepted all over the world, and will add my searches and experiments to them, I will not repeat anything customary, clichéd, ready-made, personalized, that has no taste left in my hands, I will do everything I can. Instead of putting my mind, my own experience, my own life, my own heart, on every line, every stain, every color, every speck, every breath I take, the water I drink, the soil I step on, my eye, my ear, my nose, my hand, my waist, my tongue, my skin. I swear. The day I break my oath, I will leave here."

"Nude"

A RARE WORK OF NURİ İYEM FROM 1954...

Nuri Iyem: Independent, Realist, a Painting Indigenous to Turkey: Nuri Iyem’s art, is more then interconnections to form a harmonious whole but rather an area where conflicts are being lived out. In Nuri Iyem’s art life there are periodic discontinuities and when one searches for continuity behind the contradictions, the common grounds that will establish continuity will appear as “realistic”. Nevertheless realism is a concept that is binding in Nuri Iyem’s art, commenting on contrasts and differencies can remain inadequent. Then again describing the paintings as “realist” can cause a few objections. In response to this, when “modernism” is chosen as a connective concept, it is easier to find a holistic approach in Nuri Iyem’s works. Before saying more, when “Modernism” and “Westernization” stood side by side they surrounded the Turkish social life for the last century and became problematic during the Republic period. Therefore it is no wonder understanding Nuri Iyem who is a witness to “modernism” a concept that has become integrated with society. Modernism in Nuri Iyem’s art, gives you the opportunity to think of many different specialties together; the “modernistic” effects in his paintings, his comments against the “D Group”, his competence towards, illumination, to realism shows in his paintings of western style.

"Anatolian Woman"

Women Working in the Fields in Nuri İyem's Paintings: Those who go to the fields or to work will appear as series produced among İyem’s paintings. In the twilight of the morning, convoys of children and animals can be observed on narrow roads, among the slices of nature. Determined steps trample the land without hesitation or fatigue. The end of the walk reaches the “Women Working in the Fields” series; to the women hoeing the ground and collecting the crops under the heat... In the threshing floor paintings arranged like a ballet scene, Iyem’s peasant women carry their wheat bales on their heads with their arms rising upright on their bodies.

"Miners"

City Life, Industrialization, Paintings of Migrations and Fairgrounds: Let’s hear it from Günsür on his move to Istanbul followed by his new interests and new tendencies: “I came in 1959 with the intention to settle down in Istanbul. Life in the big city and its view started taking its place in my work. Istanbul was no longer the city of my youth; it was surrounded by settlements from one end to the other, a city that has factories, construction sights packed with workers from other towns, and its problems that are growing into a big avalanche, a city integrating with Anatolia. This is the view of the Turkish community life, pushed out of its town or village due to economic reasons to integrate with all the details of its contradictions. New subjects arouse by self forming their shapes, and clear cut their way onto my work. Out of town workers, construction workers, small salesmen, unemployed, settlements, shacks, fishermen, children, kites, roofs, antennas, stations, streets, and fair grounds etc..” The industrialization period is walking at a horse’s head distance with urban sprawl. On one hand there is the longing for the opportunities that contemporary technology will bring, and on the other hand the sadness over the lost past gone forever is remembered. After all that he has lived and witnesed he remembers them in an undisguised and sincere inner perception and with this point of view evaluates in the assembly of his paintings. Roofs, antennas, small scale sellers, meetings by the waterfountain, fishermen, fishponds, towns by the shore, old Istanbul homes, and the streets, the acrobats, ferris wheels, fairgrounds, baloons, kites and the sky all in the paintings…
