Nuri İyem (1915 - 2005)

Click for Artist Information

"Still Life"

Still Lifes: Among İyem's paintings, still lifes should be the least produced. These works appear as fruit compositions in the transition to the abstract period. Afterwards, objects such as fruits and pitchers are incorporated into abstract practices by transforming into geometric abstract expressions. After the 1960s, flowers gain prominence. At the core of all subjects are Nuri İyem's original creations. This is an art story whose foundations were laid in the 1940s. It is the assimilation of pattern, color and line in a unique style. These paintings are examples of an adventure in which the abstract is identified with the concrete and the symbol is embedded in the essence of expression.

"Nudes"

Leyla Gamsız and Her Sensitive Figures: All these paintings, which are dated 1997, 1998, are of course Leyla Gamsız's, but perhaps you will be surprised, but our master artist is experiencing a change... If you ask what this change is, if you wonder why it is necessary, I must immediately state that it is due to the subconscious assimilation of an aged mastery. This formation has now brought her to the limit of turning towards the inner world and abstracting from external influences. From now on, neither subject matter, nor color, nor expression, only and only painting, pure painting is the main thing... Shapes, forms are her again, nudes in general, but this time double and triple compositions are in the majority; however, this multiplicity is not a problem at all, because simplicity is essential... We see this phenomenon mostly in her colors. Again, her old simple, sincere colors are often on the order, but in a way it is as if black and white is dominant. It is such a simple painting in terms of its colors, sometimes her nudes are beautified with expressions that can be created in a few stains...

Mustafa Esirkuş (1921 - 1986)

"Fisherman"

Marine Life and Fishermen as a Local Myth Model: How did the interest in the lives of people who make their living from the sea begin in Esirkuş's art, and what were the factors that led him to paint around this interest? We do not have enough information or data to answer this question. In his fishermen paintings he paint these people as pulling nets from the sea, weaving nets, casting their nets into the sea to catch fish, chatting among themselves, sharing their rations, guarding the dive, carrying fish boxes after the return of the catch, or as a fishing family.

Necdet Kalay (1932 - 1986)

"Carpet Weavers"

Necdet Kalay; An Original Painting Master: In Necdet Kalay's works, there is an atmosphere that draws us into the painting, soothes us and, frankly, gives us peace. The fact that he works in a style that gives the impression of leaving the canvas partially blank provides this effect. His landscapes, which do not give much space to details in the Impressionist style, emphasize color contrasts, and work with fast brush strokes, are usually painted in front of nature. Necdet Kalay was also criticized for being a productive artist. It is a good thing that he worked fast and hard in a short lifetime and left us these beautiful works; and without reminding us of another artist evoked by his unique style...

"Ox Cart and Village Road"

Necdet Kalay; An Original Painting Master: Kalay firstly painted ships, barges, barges, forks, harbor paintings from the Golden Horn with an intensity to form a series. He also painted the foggy, snowy corners of Istanbul neighborhoods in this period. The second important series is his Anatolian themed paintings. Such as Safranbolu Houses, views of Bursa, Göreme, Ürgüp, villages and snow pictures, rug weavers, oxcarts traveling on dirt roads. ''Anatolian Steppe'' evokes the color yellow more predominantly than other earth colors. In Kalay's brush, yellow has found its true place and value in the painting of elements that belong to us. Let us consider the figurative-abstractionist Kalay's images with a tumbrel. An ox tumbrel pulled by a pair of oxen is moving slowly across the vast steppe, which has been completely yellowed by autumn. The ox tumbrel and the nomads moving towards new hopes on it; fused with the desolate steppe, almost integrated, we can feel the squeaking of the wheels even though we cannot hear them. Is there a painting lover who does not recognize these paintings?
