The Medal of Independence, which is a medal of heroism, was given to the soldiers and civilians who were useful in the War of Independence, to those who were deputies at that time, to the banners of the regiments participating in the war, to those who participated in the Erzurum and Sivas Congresses, according to a special law called the Independence Medal Law. It was given by the Turkish National Assembly until 1 November 1926.
