Selahattin Teoman

Selahattin Teoman (1901 - 1980)

In 1920, Teoman graduated from the Istanbul Teachers' School and studied painting with Şevket Dağ and Halil Paşa. In 1954, he attended the Ali Avni Çelebi Workshop at the Academy of Fine Arts. He served as the director of the Rumeli Hisarı Museum and retired from this position.

The artist is known for his landscapes from different parts of Istanbul, based on the Impressionist approach. The view titled "Bosphorus from Nakkaştepe" in the Central Bank Art Collection is an interesting composition that continues the tradition of Bosphorus paintings typical of the painters of the 1914 Generation. Focusing on a central point in the foreground that also centers the horizon line, the depth establishes a composition that determines the color structuring and clarity of the painting. Teoman almost embroidered the painting in the foreground with the functional keystroke technique formulated by Hikmet Onat. In the background, the purple-weighted painting, which envelops the Bosphorus silhouette and transforms it into a foggy space, draws attention with its effect that strengthens the dramatic structure. A member of the Fine Arts Union, Teoman passed away in 1980 in the United States.
