This map shows the area covered by the Ottoman Empire in Asia, the Persian Empire, Arabia and Egypt. The hand-colored map describes the desert on the south and west of present-day Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates as "waterless and uninhabited." The map was made by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy and his son, one of the most important cartographers of the 18th century.
