Italian-born painter Giovanni Brindesi (1826-1888) lived in Istanbul during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecit (1831-1861) and painted scenes from Ottoman daily-life and army life during this period. Brindesi's paintings were translated into lithograph engravings by the famous Lemercier publishing house in Paris and published in two volumes in 1855 and 1860. One of the volumes depicts the clothes of people, mostly of Ottoman courtesy, and the other shows scenes of daily life in Istanbul.
