"Un Homme et Une Femme au Cafe"

A Lost Face In The Crowd: Fikret Mualla: Have you noticed how at ease Fikret Mualla feels in a crowd? Although he spent all his life greaming of four walls in which to take refuge, he regards a crowd as his home. He often wanders in places to which he feels he belongs. He spends time in bars and bistros where amusement and melancoly are inextricably entwined, becomes lost in the pandemonium of the street that flows away carelessly, and illuminates the melancholy that is obscured by the glittering nightlife. The artist is now viewing the crowd impartially. It is as if he were rearranging all the rooms of a vast house in which he himself were living; changing the colors of the walls, discarding what is unwanted, and bringing together the things that he always wishes to see. Collecting people of diverse social classes anda ge groups from the street, he places them in a single-colored room. He seats a smart gentleman and his overdressed wife with a street unchin, and a businessman returning from work netx to a young woman selling flowers in the same place, at the same unidentified time. In some cases, there is not even a city skyline or tavern atmosphere to give any sense of time and space. These street figures come together in front of the colored wall of the room, perhaps against their will. The painter pairs them off in front of a plain background, in other words, he puts them on display. We seem to be watching part of an equivalence map for comparing character, dress, social class and mood. It is as if the painter were csaying, “Human beings consist of nothing but what is conveyed by the countenance and body.”

"Au Bar"

The Bar Paintings of Mualla : Bars and Bistros, are one of the most important themes of Fikret Mualla. When he is broke he visits familiar bar and bistros owners and managers and in exchange for a few drinks he gives them paintings, these are places that he frequents, therefore he can reflect the actual environment. He has painted hundreds of bistro paintings, but no bistro painting is a variation of the other. Bars are Fikret Mualla’s first choice to visit when he feels lonely. Fikret has spent each earned penny on alcohol, has never tried drinking at home when it would have been less expensive. The first thing he would do as soon as he has some cash would be to run to the bar, order the most epensive food, drink and buy for others too. This way not only has he socialized but he would escape the problems of his life for a couple of hours. Fikret Mualla defines the difference between the bar counter and the crowd, at the same time, he uses the mutual grounds that interconnect these two realms and brings them to the forfront of the painting. In some examples he shakes the core of the rules of perspective  by one look acknowledging the different depths. In some paintings, he spreads the red fov around the place, and at the same time would draw the three dimensional table such as Matisse’s in a single dimension without causing any illusion. The black musicians are actually playing fast music but they are posing in stillness.

''Two Women''

A Fresh Tribute To Fikret Mualla: Every artist who sees the human figure as the main theme of his art (As Fikret Mualla did) either works from memory or from the model in front of him; some, like Giacometti, were unable to move a brush or spatula without a live model to look at, while others like Picasso could, in the blinking of an eye, take in an image of the model in front of them and retrieve it years later at will, to decipt in whatever form they fancied. Fikret Mualla was somehow a combination of the two, though nearer to the latter type, to Picasso.

"Nude"

Nudes: It is difficult for Fikret Mualla to ponder just like the classical artist attitude when creating a series of paintings. Portraits, model the identity of the person they represent but this does not show openly. Paintings that are within this group, such as a nude woman, he is more interested in relaying an average drawing of the figure rather then painting it. That is why “nudity”, has not been painted with an “erotic” vision. According to Abidin Dino Mualla’s female nudes and female heads are full of feelings and attractiveness. They have been “Drawn” and look like they are “not oil based”- maybe because of this they let the viewer get goose bumps from the young beauty. The nudes carry the magic of the unreachable goal. It is not woman, but womanhood in that. Mualla tresspasses the story, reaches to the general view. Maybe to understand womanhood, like Fikret he dreamt of them as much as he would dream and have waited.

"Arture 282 Influences (B) - 22 Baudelaire"

THIS WORK IS FROM THE COLLECTION OF JACQUES VALLET, THE AUTHOR OF THE ARTIST'S BOOK "ARSLAN L'HOMME", PRINTED IN FRANCE...

What is Arture?: I made the decision to make the series EFFECTS after reading Paul Eluard's "Donner A Voir" in January-February 1980. "A new series: From prehistory to the present, to humanity, to all civilizations..., a universal respect for everything that man has created with his labor and tools... In short, a new series: Effects. Here there are secondary effects and transcendences. We should not forget musicians and other artists, filmmakers, scientists...! To tell the truth, this idea was not new. Because I had dreamed of making such a series in 1965, 1968 and 1976, and some works such as "The Source and Origins of Arture" that I made in 1968 were already preceding this.

"Composition Abstrait"

FROM NEJAD'S PARIS PERIOD WORKS...

Paris and 50's: Since 1953 Nejad produced lots of big canvas paintings; some on black backdrop, long before Lanskoy some on white backdrop. Like precious blackstones or like a kaleidoscope sparkling flair of colors and light are dispersed all around this dense standstill. In the meantime on white canvas light comes out of red, yellow, purple, orange are sucked in by the taint cold hues of blue and green. Nejad is a color specialist. He plays with them like a musician plays with his notes. Besides canvas material he plays with color, light and creates life. As he takes care of transparency and the vibration of light his brush strokes become lighter. It’s almost impossible not to remember Goethe’s study on the clash of colors. “A German poet says that colors are movement of light. The movement is their passion’’. Nejad practised this thought successfully on his canvases between 1950-1960.

"Composition Abstrait"

Selim Turan’s Liberal Representations: Colors multiplying in a soft rhythm… Ascending to the peak in a determined stroke, uniting bold and defining lines… Embedded in a dominant enigma of layers of color… Spiralling falls of eternal depths of colorful and textural passes… Still reassurance of infinity, conflicting momentarily with escalating waves of emotional outbursts… One point or one color sinking back into eternal overlapping flow…Like colors, a soul internalizing substantially, lines crossing, overlapping, gushing, free of expressionism is what we find in Selim Turan’s works. Colorfulness adding new meanings to dynamic style are signs of liberation. Abstract definition of profound meanings loaded paintings.

Abidin Dino (1913 - 1993)

"Tavola IV"

Abidin's Flowers: For Abidin, the flower in his paintings is both a giving and receiving quality and also a universal quality. It takes root in the experiences of mankind, emerging from the spirit and elements of nature, with its good or bad fate, disasters, violence and obligations specific to man. Then it opens. And all that Abidin experiences and tries to understand are these.

The continuous element that connects the different phases of his work, Abidin's flowers create a world of their own between the world we live in and another world, each time underlining it with a special feeling and a different perspective. It is as if these flowers have absorbed many messages with what the artist has experienced; some are as old as the world, some carry prophecies for the future, and others remind those who see them of their own experiences. These flowers, which confirm a real creation, do not tire us with the insistence of their themes, on the contrary, we become passionate about each of them, they grow so that we can search for and find the "other thing" that makes us believe they are hiding behind them.

"Portrait"

A PORTRAIT WORK BY NURİ İYEM FROM THE 70'S...

Details Faces: Starting from 1962 the delicacy of portrait paintings which has started with the exhibition “Liman” will be evolving to multiple. Works on woman faces in İyem’s art. The canvasses which are being ruled by oval faces, with a white or a enframing black cover, or sometimes hair with a similar mission, are being illustrated as a different examples of this grouping with the delicacy of Nuri İyem. From Anger to patience, love to hatred, inevitability to desperation, darkness to love but most importantly the eyes which are burning with lights which are leaning from discrete rebellions to shocking screams are dominant in İyem’s expression. The monumentalized faces are being shaked with the emotions that the glance has been reflecting. Sometimes the lips are opening with the painful scream of rebellion, from the faces which are monumentalizing the patience of hundred years. These paintings are the interpretations which are being filtered by his process of abstraction and artistic expression. This subjective abstraction is the base of the structure of composition. While the values which are defining the personalities are becoming to portraits, the shapes and objects which are completely purified by the details, are opening to symbolic investigations. The fabrics and hair by covering the heads are emframing the faces as the balances of stains to make the skin textures visible. All the mimics and drawings which are creating a meaning in the faces are being carefully selected. The lips and noses which were minimized to simple forms are reinforcing the frozen effect of sculptural faces. The eyes were kept to reflect the individualism and personality and being revealed as a spectacular visuality. The eyes which are creating portraits from these sculptural faces and even revealing it’s owner’s whole life.

"From Golden Horn"

Necdet Kalay; An Original Painting Master: In Necdet Kalay's works, there is an atmosphere that draws us into the painting, soothes us and, frankly, gives us peace. The fact that he works in a style that gives the impression of leaving the canvas partially blank provides this effect. His landscapes, which do not give much space to details in the Impressionist style, emphasize color contrasts, and work with fast brush strokes, are usually painted in front of nature. Necdet Kalay was also criticized for being a productive artist. It is a good thing that he worked fast and hard in a short lifetime and left us these beautiful works; and without reminding us of another artist evoked by his unique style...
