Saim Bugay

Saim Bugay (1934 - 2008)

Born in 1934 in Mersin, he studied at the Şadi Çalık Workshop at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts (now Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University) between 1962 and 1967. During his travels and studies in various countries in Europe between 1969 and 1975, the artist had the opportunity to develop his expertise in wood sculpture. He drew attention with his first abstract sculptures made by processing iron. In his wood sculptures, he emphasized symmetrical forms based on emblems or fetish forms.

In 1967, he represented Turkey in the Paris Youth Biennial with his sculpture "Fishermen". In 1967, his sculptures were exhibited at the Paris Youth Biennale and in 1968 and 1969 at Robert College and DGSA sculpture exhibitions. In 1966, he made panels for the Marine Animals Museum of Istanbul University, Faculty of Science, Institute of Hydrobiology.

After working at the Collemarini workshop in Paris for a short time, he opened his own workshop. Saim Bugay, who maintained an expressive line in sculpture aimed at conveying messages with different tools and materials, is among the successful representatives of the middle generation. He passed away in 2008.
