"From Golden Horn"

Erbil and Abstractions That Make the Invisible Visible: The land masses formed by separation of rhythmic orders create the geographical sections that define Istanbul. Broken lines define districts, streets and architectural structures. Geometric designs determined on the vertical and horizontal planes make the monuments distinctive. The result is unique views of Istanbul depicted with Erbil's abstract understanding. In this context, traditional sources, which have always maintained their existence among the sources he has turned to since his education years, take their place in the designs of the compositions as clear indicators. Erbil is one of the few painters who assimilated Nakkaş Osman's El Fetihname and Nakkaş Velican's manuscript describing the conquest of Istanbul. Maybe it's the only example. He is a painter who wanders around, examines and assimilates manuscripts, old maps, and the books drawn by tax collector Nasuh and written by Evliya Çelebi. Erbil is different as an artist who examines the mosaics of the Kariye Mosque and the works of the Museum of Islamic Arts. He is a unique example, an artist with very rich cultural layers, who creates areas of reading, seeing and examining from Africa to Mesopotamia, from Anatolia to European painting, and places his resources on the heritage of world art. This difference must be what makes Erbil's Istanbul paintings privileged. The abstractions defining Sarayburnu, the Marmara, the Anatolian side and the Bosphorus, the monumental architecture of Sultanahmet surrounded by its minarets reaching to the sky, the Golden Horn floating between the pieces of land like a golden horn, and the Bosphorus connecting the two continents with silver sparkles, are transformed into works of art on Erbil's canvases as symbols that define Istanbul. Istanbul abstractions are paintings of an Erbil interpretation that evokes traditions but rises above all values attached to traditions. They are the most successful and original examples of abstract city views.

"Write Down The Rest Of Your Time In Your Heartbook"

Approaching A Stranger Friend: Inan portrays what is hidden and his own mysterious world. He sees the magnitude of the universe, of the cosmos in a tiny ‘dot’, in a ‘particle’. He reaches the universe from a dot, departing from a detail to reach the whole. Working, for him, requires a great concentration. This concentration means breakingthe bond with the outside world and diving into the inner world, like some kind of meditation. He creates a universe weaved with coincidences, intersections, meetings; he gets excited when he perceives the secret order of the complex. His mysticism lies in the search of the unknown. He reaches objectivity from a subjective concept in his inner world. “I do not know where I am getting to, but I am trying to sort myself out... My painting or my idea is always to draw what is in the heart. Who goes to the heart, sees the pictures that hands cannot touch, that eyes cannot see; embraces people,” he says.

"Figure"

A work from the artist's 80s Paris period... Ömer Uluç's most sought-after period…

Between the Abstract and the Figure: Ömer Uluç, who examined the complex interconnectedness between the figurative and the abstract throughout his entire stylistic adventure, also focused on this problem on his Nigerian experience covering the years 1974-77 and finally on his Paris experiences in the 80s, where he continued his artistic career. When the relationship between figurative and abstract is considered in the context of the relationship between real and abstract images, it is still the previous years that coincide with the tense environment of the first figuration process in the efforts to find a solution to this problematic. In a conversation with Uluç in 1969, he described the local traditions, which he described as the complete opposite of the western painting tradition, as the transformation of a mass of color into a bird or flower, a geometric mass plastic into a figure, a drawing or text into a human face (New Magazine, 1969). Instead of creating the form by looking at nature, mobilizing an abstract design for common meaning goals. Thus, integrating with a logic that results in an image that is both figurative and abstract. The conditions for the realization of an imaginary design goal that could be contrasted with real design could be found in a sign scheme in which objects depicted through drawing, color or mass elements abstracted from the object were determined.

Nuri İyem (1915 - 2005)

Click for Artist Information

"Migrant Woman"

Details Faces: Starting from 1962 the delicacy of portrait paintings which has started with the exhibition “Liman” will be evolving to multiple. Works on woman faces in İyem’s art. The canvasses which are being ruled by oval faces, with a white or a enframing black cover, or sometimes hair with a similar mission, are being illustrated as a different examples of this grouping with the delicacy of Nuri İyem. From Anger to patience, love to hatred, inevitability to desperation, darkness to love but most importantly the eyes which are burning with lights which are leaning from discrete rebellions to shocking screams are dominant in İyem’s expression. The monumentalized faces are being shaked with the emotions that the glance has been reflecting. Sometimes the lips are opening with the painful scream of rebellion, from the faces which are monumentalizing the patience of hundred years. These paintings are the interpretations which are being filtered by his process of abstraction and artistic expression. This subjective abstraction is the base of the structure of composition. While the values which are defining the personalities are becoming to portraits, the shapes and objects which are completely purified by the details, are opening to symbolic investigations. The fabrics and hair by covering the heads are emframing the faces as the balances of stains to make the skin textures visible. All the mimics and drawings which are creating a meaning in the faces are being carefully selected. The lips and noses which were minimized to simple forms are reinforcing the frozen effect of sculptural faces. The eyes were kept to reflect the individualism and personality and being revealed as a spectacular visuality. The eyes which are creating portraits from these sculptural faces and even revealing it’s owner’s whole life.
